Caring for LVP Floors in Idaho Homes

Luxury vinyl plank is low maintenance, not no maintenance. In this valley, four specific conditions do most of the visible aging, and all four are easy to manage.

Grit is the real enemy

Treasure Valley homes track in fine dust, gravel dust from driveways and construction, and winter road grit. That material acts like sandpaper underfoot and dulls a wear layer faster than any spill.

A firm-bristle mat outside and an absorbent mat inside each entry, plus regular sweeping or a vacuum on hard-floor mode, does more for the floor's appearance over ten years than any product you can buy.

Cleaning without damaging the finish

Damp mopping with a neutral cleaner is the standard. Avoid steam mops — heat and forced moisture can affect adhesives and seams even on waterproof plank — and avoid abrasive pads.

Skip wax, polish, and oil soaps. They build a film on the wear layer that dulls unevenly and is difficult to remove.

Sunlight and heat

South and west-facing rooms here get intense summer sun. Prolonged direct exposure can fade some design layers and, on very hot glazing, cause localized heat buildup on a floating floor.

Blinds, sheers, or UV window film during peak afternoon hours protect the floor and reduce the temperature swing the assembly has to absorb.

Dry winter air

Indoor humidity can drop very low here in winter. LVP handles that far better than wood, but the rest of the assembly — trim, transitions, and adjacent materials — still moves.

Keeping indoor conditions within the range the manufacturer specifies year-round is the simplest way to keep everything stable.

Furniture and appliances

Use wide felt pads under chair and table legs, and hard-surface casters or caster cups on rolling chairs. Narrow metal feet concentrate load and can dent a softer core.

When moving an appliance, lay down a hardboard path rather than walking it across the plank. Most dents we see on otherwise perfect floors came from one afternoon.

Takeaways

  • Entry mats and regular sweeping preserve the wear layer better than any cleaner.
  • Neutral cleaner and a damp mop only — no steam, wax, or abrasives.
  • Manage strong afternoon sun in south and west rooms.
  • Felt pads, caster cups, and a protective path when moving appliances.
