How to Read an LVP Spec Sheet
Two boxes of luxury vinyl plank can look identical and cost very differently. Almost all of that difference lives in five numbers on the back of the box.
Wear layer, measured in mils
The wear layer is the clear top film that takes all the abuse. It is measured in mils — thousandths of an inch — not millimeters, and it is the single best predictor of how the floor will look in five years.
Thin wear layers are typically found in the lowest-cost residential products and are best suited to light-traffic rooms. Mid-range thicknesses cover normal family use. The thickest residential and light-commercial wear layers are what we suggest for entries, kitchens, and homes with large dogs.
SPC vs. WPC cores
SPC (stone plastic composite) cores are denser and harder. They are more dimensionally stable in temperature swings, resist denting from heavy furniture, and telegraph subfloor imperfections more readily because they do not compress.
WPC (wood plastic composite) cores are lighter and slightly softer underfoot, with a bit more warmth and sound absorption. They are more forgiving to walk on and more prone to denting under concentrated point loads.
Overall thickness and attached pad
Overall plank thickness includes the core, the design layer, the wear layer, and any attached pad. A thicker plank is not automatically better — a thick plank with a thin wear layer will scuff early.
Attached pad simplifies installation and helps with sound, but it also means you cannot add a separate underlayment on top of it. Doubling up pad is a common DIY mistake that causes seam stress and joint failure.
Locking system and plank dimensions
Angle-tap, angle-angle, and drop-lock systems each install differently, and some are much easier to work with in tight spaces like closets and around door casings.
Wider and longer planks look excellent in open rooms but are less forgiving over an uneven subfloor because each plank spans more distance. In a compartmentalized older home, a moderate plank size is often the smarter call.
The warranty fine print
Manufacturer warranties are conditional. They typically specify a maximum subfloor deviation over a given span, moisture limits for concrete, required expansion gaps, and rules about underlayment and radiant heat.
Read those conditions before installation, not after a claim. They are the reason professional prep is written into a scope as its own line item.
