LVP vs. Laminate vs. Engineered Wood
These three products look similar in a showroom and behave very differently in a house. The honest way to choose is to start with the room, the household, and the subfloor rather than with the sample board.
What each product actually is
Luxury vinyl plank is a multi-layer PVC-based product, usually built on a rigid stone-composite or wood-composite core, with a printed design layer and a clear wear layer on top. The core does not swell when it gets wet.
Laminate is a high-density fiberboard core with a printed layer and a tough melamine wear surface. The wear surface is hard, but the core is wood-based, so prolonged water at a seam can cause irreversible swelling.
Engineered wood is real wood: a hardwood veneer over a plywood or composite core. It can be refinished if the veneer is thick enough, and it responds to humidity the way wood does.
Water, humidity, and Idaho seasons
The Treasure Valley swings from very dry winter indoor air to hot summers, and homes here run humidifiers, swamp coolers, and forced air at different times of year. That cycle is hardest on solid and engineered wood, which gaps and cups as it gains and loses moisture.
LVP is the most tolerant of that cycle and of actual spills, which is why it dominates kitchens, entries, mudrooms, and basements. Laminate sits in between: modern water-resistant products handle a wiped-up spill fine, but a dishwasher leak that sits overnight is a different event.
Wear, scratches, and dents
Laminate generally resists surface scratching best because of its melamine wear layer. LVP resists dents and impact better because it is more resilient and does not chip the way a hard laminate surface can.
The real variable in LVP is wear-layer thickness. A thin wear layer in a busy entry will scuff long before the plank fails structurally. For a household with dogs and kids, that specification matters far more than the brand name on the box.
Repairability and resale
Engineered wood can be sanded and refinished if the veneer allows, which is a genuine long-term advantage. LVP and laminate cannot be refinished; damage is repaired by replacing planks, which is realistic on a glue-down floor or near the edge of a floating one, and awkward in the middle of a large floating field without attic stock.
Real wood still carries a resale perception advantage with some buyers. In practical terms, well-installed LVP in good condition presents far better than tired wood or worn carpet.
How subfloor changes the answer
Over a slab — a basement, a converted garage, or a slab-on-grade main floor — LVP is usually the straightforward choice, with moisture handled by testing and the right system.
Over a wood subfloor with some unevenness, all three products want flatness, but rigid-core LVP is the most forgiving of small deviations and the least tolerant of rocking. None of them fix a bad subfloor.
